The Stylist Behind The Blog
Hi everyone! My name is Marissa Knight and I’m the stylist behind the chair and this blog! I want to start by saying I’m super grateful for every person who reads these blogs, sits in my chair, and supports me and my business in any way!
I was born in Southern California, Harbor City to be exact, in 1994. My parents had me after they had been married for a few years. They were born and raised in the Southern California area and moved us out to Northern Nevada when I was about three years old.
I’m the oldest sibling out of three, my sister is the middle child, and my brother is the youngest. We all grew up in the small town of Gardnerville Nevada. I remember doing a lot of family activities together like camping, snowboarding and enjoying big holiday’s.
When I was in middle school, I started to really enjoy fashion and styling different outfits together. I loved looking through youth magazines and seeing what trends were coming into play and what big celebrities were wearing. I really thought I would be getting into this styling fashion industry in the future and hoping it could become a career. My ideal job then was to be like Stacey and Clint from the TV show ‘What Not To Wear’. Basically I wanted to help styling anyone and everyone to make them feel more confident in myself and in any situation. That was my ideal career.
Even in high school, I was always planning outfits for myself, my mom and sister, and a lot of my friends. I had a lot of fun with clothes and styling them, but never felt like an extra girly girl or like someone who cared about beauty and hair. Don’t get me wrong, I loved wearing my 20” clip in extensions (PS they were awful) styling my hair in a sock bun (yikes) and wearing minimal makeup. But still, my love and focus was more on the clothes.
It wasn’t until I moved to Reno with my now fiance, when I discovered this industry. It was around my 23rd birthday and the first time I had ever colored my hair. My mom was never against it, she had just always told me my natural color was beautiful and I didn’t need to do anything to it.
But after going to the salon two or three times, I was intrigued. I loved the vibe, the relaxation, the warmth in the room, the creativity and the ability to wear anything you wanted. Side note, at this time I was working at a popular restaurant in the downtown area with long nights, decent money, but my current job was lacking in creativity. I wanted something new. So I started researching about the hair industry, and I’m so grateful I did.
Being a hairstylist is more rewarding than I had ever thought. Yes there’s plenty of challenges and difficulties, but there’s a lot of joy and fulfillment too. What I discovered quickly was that I could do exactly what I wanted to do from the start. I could be creative in a space that allowed me to make another person feel just as confident and amazing as they look. The only difference is instead of doing that through clothing, I get to do it through hair.
This journey has been so amazing for me so far, and I’m so beyond thankful for everyone who has supported me in any way. I want to say a special thank you to my fiance Jordan, my mom Christine, my dad Ken, my sister Mikayla, my best friend Jess, all of my grandparents, my mentor and great friend Krista, and to my dogs Parker and Jackson. Without any of you, none of this would be possible.
